Facts on hair loss

Hair is an outgrowth of the epidermis or outer layer of skin. It is developed from specialised skin (epidermal) cells that form hair follicles. The growing portion of hair is the hair root (hair papilla) which is found at the base of the follicles. The external portion of the hair (or hair shaft) is made of specialised protein called keratin. The hair shaft is naturally lubricated by sebum secreted by the sebaceous or oil glands.

Hair, like nails and skin, goes through a cycle of growth and rest. During the growth period, certain hairs are actively growing. and simultaneously, certain hairs are resting, while others face the shedding process. It is normal to drop 50 to 100 strands of hair per day with new hairs growing to replace the dropped hairs.

Hair loss can be permanent or temporary. The condition can occur in any part of the body but becomes acutely noticeable when it affects the scalp. Some people may experience hair shedding or hair thinning over the whole scalp, whilst others experience patchy hair loss.
